I am curious to hear people’s opinions about why this can even happen.

We saw similar things with Theranos, it was obviously a scam to anyone who has a technical background. I remember people asking me about it in school, before it was known, and it was not difficult to figure out it was all bullshit.

There are dozens of examples like this, of technology that obviously does not exist, or even cannot exist, and yet the companies get billions in investment and lots of media attention. Some of these companies survive for decades. I remember one of the first things I argued about on the internet was how Solar Roadways was obviously BS, and that company apparently is still around!

Do investors just not do any due diligence at all? Because in either of these cases, a 5-minute chat with an expert (or tbh, even someone who’s marginally aware of what’s going on) should have been enough to determine it’s BS.

Or do they just ignore experts? Or are the “experts” they employ also faking it?

And why is no one in the media ever even slightly skeptical of this kind of BS? They show plenty of skepticism for valid, real, and useful products and science, so it’s not like they’re unable to do that.
